While my involvement in business has been within the narrow band of asset management and corporate investment, my business interests are broadly strategic.
But my interest in business strategies is largely due to my first-hand experiences with the dramatic changes that have affected the world these past two decades. While it may seem prosaic to say that the new realities have brought profound challenges to everybody involved in business – I have discovered that it is possible to recognize how change conspires with ongoing events to create new opportunities. This is the area where much of my current business is occupied. Business Diplomacy. Often, just about any business interest will lead to a discussion about commercial development and economic expansion, however in my experience, in order for such discussions to lead to successful trade and investment, you need a business diplomat to help guide the way.
Usually, the required dialog begins with business and government, but the goal is to help all parties strike a balance between cultural sensitivities and social need while forming the foundation that can lead to economic prosperity. Strategic planning may uncover the seed of mutual interest, but it takes forward-thinking and fully invested parties to realize the fruit of mutual benefit. Certainly, from a purely pragmatic point of view, change is opportunity, but anticipating and managing change is not only possible – it is imperative in today’s business climate.
I have worked diligently to forge effective strategic business alliances for all my businesses and clients. My approach to business development and investment has allowed me to cultivate increased client earnings and market share based on deftly coordinated strategic business alliances, supported by a legion of experts, analysts and contacts spanning the globe. Accessible, informative and effective resources link my business partners and business associates to new markets whether they are doing business in San Francisco, California or in St. Petersburg, Russia.
A new language that is responsive to the real demands of a changing society is needed to survive and succeed in this global marketplace. I have learned to speak that language and while I respect the importance of the old adage “when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” I also expect that all rules are subject to change, sometimes dramatically and nearly Gary H. I have been a corporate executive, an entrepreneur, a global investor, and a business consultant. My clients and personal investments have drawn me into a variety of businesses and financial entities here in the U.S. and abroad.
Just as political diplomats seek peace through political arrangement, business diplomats seek mutual business interests that can lead to mutual benefit. Seeding global business opportunities in a local space is frequently as difficult as its political counterpart, but if successful it can help strike the constructive framework that makes trade and investment possible.
Many of the new challenges are especially emphasized by the after-effects of September 11. Business paradigms that we once thought were unchangeable are now nearly unrecognizable. Some changes have forced us to develop new business practices and alter management fundamentals. While it is obvious that there are new rules associated with assessing risk and investment strategies, not so obvious to many executives is how these challenges should be tackled.
I believe firms that combine the expertise and discipline of emerging international business styles, procure and manage good resources, create secure operations, and engage superior marketing strategies will be the survivors and the ones that will prosper in decades to come. In meeting these wide ranging challenges, corporations must also adopt flexible entrepreneurial management structures while engaging markets armed with plenty of venture capital and good data.
Moreover, it has always been especially compelling for me to play a direct role in ventures while seeking balance between economic goals and civic, social, and environmental responsibility. This philosophy is imbedded in my character, thanks largely to my extensive travels on business or diplomatic missions and witnessing first hand the severe imbalances and inequities that exist in many nations and societies.
